Download ELIZA - it's cheaper than therapy! ELIZA is a fun chatterbot that simulates a Rogerian psychotherapist, using pattern-matching techniques to respond. For example, a comment like "I hate my job" might get an answer like "Why do you hate your job?"
ELIZA was developed at MIT by Joseph Weizenbaum. My implementation is based on his published paper, but any bugs are my own.
ELIZA is commonly discussed in introductory artificial intelligence classes. ELIZA was famous for being one of the first programs to pass the Turing test, meaning that the dialogue was realistic enough that users couldn't tell if it was a human or a machine speaking back to them. For more information, see the Eliza article on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELIZA.
