Record Voice & Pen is an app for creating video's for lessons, instructions, presentations or any type of screencasting. It records your voice and the drawing with your pen or finger at the same time. You can annotate pictures while explaining, and share it as videos (mp4 files) by mail, upload to YouTube or Facebook, or use it in presentations and classrooms.
You can create a quick recording, where you immediately start recording voice and pen. But you can also start with a base recording, where you just draw. There are lots of editing possibilities, like adjusting timing, and inserting and deleting strokes or images. In the second stage you can record your voice to the base recording. When recording voice it is possible to make annotations to support what you are saying.
When you create a new recording, you start by preparing the recording by setting for example the background color. But one can also add background images. When adding a background image you can zoom in or out of the image by using the familiar gestures, but you can also place the image on the canvas where you want. For example you can add the same image multiple times, where each time you zoom in on a different part of the image. The image list can be re-ordered which suits you best when doing the actual recording. One can also remove images from the list by dragging them out of the list and drop them on the bin.
You start the recording by pressing the record button in the lower right corner. A timer just above the record button will show you how long the recording is running. When you are recording, you can change the image by clicking on an image in the image list or drag it on the canvas. By pressing the top left button in the list, one can clear the recording from an image, so it just displays the background color. One can change the thickness of the pen by clicking on the pen thickness menu and move your pen or finger up- or down-ward, to either in- or decrease the thickness. To clear the canvas from annotations you can press the button in the clear menu.
By pressing the record button in the lower right corner again, the recording will stop, and a menu is presented. This menu will allow to play back what just has been recorded.
The menu has also the option of exporting the recording to an mp4 video file. You can share the mp4 video file with anyone through the share charm, or upload to YouTube or Facebook. When choosing this option, it will show a wizard where you can set things like the resolution, and add a custom video logo.
Because exporting the recording to an mp4 file involves encoding video, the export might take some time. So now the menu also has the option to save the recording, and export it at a later time when it is more convenient for you.
And if you are not happy with the recording, you just might start over and over again, until you are satisfied with the result.
