World War I - The Great War In 1918 a group of Kansas Citians was motivated to create a memorial to never forget those who fought to restore freedom. From the majestic tower to the protective sphinxes, each symbol presents stories of the war, its heroes, and the desire for peace. As we tour the Liberty Memorial, not only do we uncover these stories, but also revealed is the history of the monument, so those who went before us can remind us of lessons we may need to hear again.
