Stanislaw Firlej (cello) and Anna Wesolowska (piano) perform Schubert's Sonata in A minor for Arpeggione and Piano, D. 821. The work was commissioned in 1824 by Schubert's friend Vincenz Schuster, who himslef was a virtuoso on the arpeggione, an instrument which had been invented only the previous year. The sonata was published in 1871, almost half a decade after Schubert's death, when the enthusiasm for the novelty of the arpeggione had long since vanished, as was the instrument itself. Nowadays the piece is heard in transcriptions for cello or viola. This performance is recorded in The Ksiezy Mlyn Residence, Lôdz, Poland in 1994.
