Smolenska, one of Russia’s oldest cities is witness to many eras of history. It is called the ‘shield city’, as it served as a reliable defense for Moscow, the capital. The key fortress made for battle spans over six km & hosts several towers, none identical to the other. This 16th-century stronghold of the ‘Tsars’ became a precedent for classical Russian architecture & great artistic expression.
