Malcolm and Brenda go camping for the weekend to get away from pressures at the Wilson and Stoneway homes. In the pub that evening, Brenda overhears two twitchers planning their day birdwatching at Mere Sands and she persuades Malcolm to take her. Brenda falsely reports that they have seen a rare bird within earshot of the twitchers and they seize upon the opportunity to alert Nancy's, a cafe in Norwich where rare sightings are recorded. Within hours all serious birdwatchers in the UK descend on the area where Malcolm and Brenda are camping.
