King (1929-68) was a Baptist minister and led some of the first Civil Rights actions in the 1950's, such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, becoming the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Despite the violence he and his supporters faced during their long struggle, he insisted that they follow his example of non-violence in response (under Gandhi's influence). He was as well-known for his eloquent, impassioned speeches as for his actions. His most famous speeches are "I Have A Dream," before hundreds of thousands from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, and "I've Been To The Mountaintop" to his followers the night before he was assassinated. He advocated justice for all classes and races.
