Dmitri Sitkovetsky conducts the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana in a performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major, Op. 25. His Symphony No. 1 is also known as the “Classical”, since the composer attempted to write a symphony in the Classical style. To achieve this, Prokofiev used, for instance, the orchestration that is characteristic of a Classical-period symphony, employing double winds and leaving out low brass instruments. It has remained one of Prokofiev’s most popular works. The symphony consists of four movements: Allegro, Larghetto, Gavotte: non troppo allegro, and Finale: molto vivace.
