Mont-Saint-Michel is a shrine dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel which was founded in the fifth century AD. From a deserted island inhabited by a few monks it grew into one of the most popular pilgrimage spots in Western Europe. This lecture details the history of the site, with a discussion of the unique Romanesque and Gothic architecture of the shrine.
