Set against the mortgage crisis of 2008 in the California, Lucas finds his future has not met his lofty expectations. 40 and unemployed, he has been living in a constant state of depression, his only joy is from cycling and 'alleycat' races; illegal events where cyclists race with wild abandon. He enters in one last alleycat, a race where he is forced to confront his personal issues and failures.
