Brazilian rhythms and melodies meet jazz harmony and improvisation in the ‘Dani & Debora Gurgel Quartet’. Their sound is an inseparable union between instrumental music and carefully written lyrics, utilizing Dani’s voice as a woodwind instrument in a jazz ambience of improvisation, stitched along the grooves of Brazilian popular music. Their original compositions are accompanied by several daring arrangements of carefully selected songs from the Brazilian, jazz and pop repertoire. This family-style Quartet has its roots in the musical mother-daughter relationship of Debora and Dani, which started when Dani was a three-year-old music pupil. But it wasn’t until drummer and producer Thiago Rabello came along that the Quartet’s current sound got its shape. The Quartet records ‘live’ in studio: the 4 of them interacting and having fun together. The Quartet’s recent album ‘um’ brings mostly Dani & Debora’s own compositions, all written after returning from a tour of Japan. The remainder is made up of by select covers of the music of Sting, Toninho Horta, Brad Mehldau, and Elis Regina.
