This Mendelssohn Gala Concert is recorded in 1997 at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. The Gewandhaus Orchestra is led by conductor Kurt Masur, with Frank-Michael Erben as solo violist. Together they perform a few of the most popular compositions by Felix Mendelssohn who himself was the fifth conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra from 1835 to 1847. On the programme are the Overture to 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in E minor and the 'Scottish Symphony' in A minor. The orchestra concludes with the Wedding March from 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.
