Through the survivors who were actually on the voyage in 1939, the film relives the dramatic events of the last ship to leave Nazi Germany with 959 Jewish passengers hoping to go to Cuba. Once there, they are refused admittance and not allowed to land either in the US or Canada. The ship returns to Europe where three-quarters of the passengers perish in the Holocaust.
