While churchmen finessed the nuances of Christian theology, an alternate set of beliefs and practices grew up amongst the rank and file. Popular ideas about the sacraments, relics, pilgrimages, and Mass did not quite jibe with those of theologians. It would take the Church some time to tame and sanctify these rituals of the common folk.
