This program explores two masterpieces of painting in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Self-Portrait (1660), by Rembrandt, and Portrait of Juan de Pareja (1650), by Velasquez. Rembrandt 's Self-Portrait is contextualized by the many self-portraits made by the remarkable artist during his lifetime. In contrast, Velasquez's Juan de Pareja is examined all on its own, and in close detail, deepening the viewer's visual understanding of the masterpiece. Introductory remarks by Philippe de Montebello, former director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, link the two masterpieces.
