Stashed away in the halls of the Lateran Palace were a few works of ancient Greece and Rome that survived the fall of the Roman Empire; these would be the core of the collection of the Vatican Museums. Art-loving Popes would add to the collection, hostile armies would loot it, noble collectors would donate to it to make, finally, a world class set of museums with collections spanning six continents and five millennia.
