Its goal was audacious: to find out whether life could ever have existed on Mars, and whether the planet is safe enough for human explorers. Just getting to the surface was risky, requiring technologies never before used. Its journey through Gale Crater and up Mt. Sharp was going to be complicated and dangerous. The robotic rover would have to adapt, right along with its human handlers.
