The European hamster, also called the field hamster, is a member of the Cricetidae family and the only wild hamster left in Germany. Its preferred habitat is fruitful corn and beet fields. Its burrow is up to two meters deep in the ground and is made up of a system of tunnels with several chambers. Female hamsters usually give birth to 4 to 12 young per litter.
