Adapted by Hanif Kureishi from his own short story, this scrupulously unsensationalised film was one of the first to tackle the issue of Anglo-Muslim relations. Om Puri gives a heartbreaking performance as minicab driver Pervez, whose decision to offer a safe service to local prostitutes appals his son (who has already started flirting with fundamentalist Islam), threatening to tear their family apart.
