From the age of four Malalai Joya was on the move. One year after her birth in 1978 Russia invaded Afghanistan, unleashing decades of war. She lived in Iran, then Pakistan. In 1998, her family moved back to Afghanistan while the Taliban were in power. She engaged in clandestine activity teaching girls in underground classes as women's education was banned.
