Joy Chan is an impressionable high school student whose dream is to become a Broadway star, but Joy's mother insists she study "to be a nurse." Joy's tryouts for school plays lands her consideration for the part of a maid "Wilson" in "The Barretts of Wimpole Street," and it's stereotype casting that causes Joy anquish and pain. She confides the secret of her rejection to her friend, math teacher Brother T.S. Murphy who tries to encourage her and is also an "odd bird" who has doubts about his religious calling. His doubts over his feelings for Joy causes him to withdraw further into his shell. But Joy's ethereal love relationship with math teacher Brother T.S. Murphy gives her the courage to try out for a Broadway show helmed by famed choreographer ("Hello Dolly") Gower Champion. Joy Chan for once in her life, goes to the try-out and takes center stage.
